Paulstretching
Musical pilates? Paulstretching is the latest meme sweeping the internet - high quality timestretching of well known tracks. Named after the paulstretch application, part of the HyperMammut suite by ZynAddSubFx, a Justin Bieber track timestretched to 800% started it all off on Soundcloud earlier this week. Paulstretch is available for Linux and Windows on the Hypermammut SourceForge page - and →
Beatbeatblog review of ‘in shadows and in light’
Beatbeatblog has just posted an awesome review of the first two parts of my series 'In shadows and in light' - check it out at http://beatbeatblog.com/posts/2010/8/1/art-installation-pt1.html ....this brings us nicely onto a piece of work that IriXx is developing at the moment - 'in shadow and in light' - a 4 track composition (parts i & ii have surfaced so →
In shadows and in light
Just completed the second part of my four part series 'In shadows and in light'. I'm building the pieces into a Set on soundcloud so you can hear the work in progress: http://soundcloud.com/irixx/sets/in-shadows-and-in-light
Remixing and rethinking
I've been busy with music over the last few months - firstly, I completed my remix of Nez Erok's haunting track 'Beautiful'. The original track is shortly to be released as a single on Ocean Drive Records. My dubstep remix is hosted on my soundcloud page: http://soundcloud.com/irixx/nez-erok-beautiful-irixx-remix - check out more remixes on Nez's soundcloud. I've also completed the first of a four →
Youtube statement on takedown requests
Last night Youtube issued a statement regarding the 'Content ID' takedown orders including the Downfall parodies mentioned in my previous post. Youtube even went so far as to link to Brad Templeton's Downfall parody as an example of fair use - something of a public apology, perhaps. But their statement still leaves some questions to be answered as to the level →
Hitler parodies, Fair Use and Mashing up the Past
News this week that Constantin Film AG were issuing DMCA takedown orders claiming the Youtube Hitler parody meme, re-subtitling the climactic scenes of the movie 'Downfall', constituted copyright infringement, saddened the internet community. Of course none of the creators of the clips would have the funding or means to mount a legal challenge against the takedown orders. Except for one. Brad →
Ghosts
Trifonic are brothers Brian and Laurence Trifon, who, since receiving their first break via the Creative Commons remix website ccMixter, have committed to releasing stems of their tracks into the Commons for musicians to remix. I've very much enjoyed listening to their debut album Emergence and decided to create a remix from various tracks, featuring the haunting vocal by Amelia June →
Two new works
I've added two new pieces to the music page - some seriously filfy dirty breaks, and Down the rabbit hole, a somewhat hypnotic return to the ambient sounds of 'enigmatic xii: beacons". "We will not be held responsible for any hearing impediment or damage caused to you by excessive exposure to this sound." (thanks to acclivity @ freesound.org for the sample!).
pertin-nce 031 – things are bad in haiti
My track 'enigmatic xii - beacons' is included in the latest pertin-nce net label release 'things are bad in haiti'. Label owner Maxime Tanguay's family were directly affected by the earthquake: Hey all! As some of you know, our label has a special connection to the earthquake ravaged country of Haiti - so in the tradition of our charity net releases we →
A redhead for my Zoom
Just got my Redhead windscreen in the post yesterday for my Zoom H4 which has made a vast improvement on the quality of my outdoors recordings. I always liked the quality of sound from my H4, but was getting frustrated by mic bump due to the Zoom-supplied shield which was just a basic piece of black foam which slotted over →
New Music Haitian Relief
Glenn Weyant and composers from Net New Music and ImprovFriday have joined to donate works towards a CD of new compositions. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these tracks will go to support www.foodforthepoor.org, a 4 Star Charity which according to Charity Navigator has 96% of their funds going to directly to buying food. $20 will allow them →
RadioPlateaux: Public and Private
As an ongoing investigation into the function and the practice of publicness radioplateaux asked artists to respond to the concept of publicness as art practice. In a broad paper composed in 2006/7 radioplateaux artists describe the practice of publicnes as one that may be “a revolutionary everyday practice”. We claimed that publicness may open ones practice essentially to a multiple →

Please don’t make me tweet!
I recently attended the annual conference of one of our major content management system vendors, which for the most part was very enjoyable and quite inspiring. Until we were asked to contribute our questions by Twitter. I took a look around the room. Very few people seemed to have brought a laptop or netbook, a few started checking their iPhones or Blackberries. →
Franck Vigroux – Live turntablism
Awesome. Really worth watching in HD.
My newest time-waster
I've spent an inordinate amount of time playing with the healthBase beta, which claims to be NetBase's 'research solution for healthcare', since reading this forum entry on TheDailyWtf.com. Described as 'when semantic extraction goes horribly wrong'... these are the results of a disastrously untested search engine being let loose on the net... and screenshots of howlers are growing day by day →
Software patenting
Sometimes it actually works in favour of the good guys... Just occasionally I come across a story that turns my world view upside down. We've become accustomed to the horror stories of large corporations using and misusing software patents to swallow up small business and buy out rights to alleged infringing programs. Australian entrepreneur Ray Richardson's story is different. ABC's The →

A couple of very nifty tools
How to make :hover work in IE6 Peter Nederlof's javascript fixes CSS dropdown menus and other elements that use the :hover pseudoclass. If you read Dutch you can read his essay here. PIALT
As far as legendary threads go, this one has to take the cake: http://thottbot.com/i13397 3.8 years and still going strong.... wait... how long has WoW been out? Blizzard actually updated the tooltip on the item to reflect the meme.
Sharepoint Tips #1
How to customise a Sharepoint list with attachments This problem is pretty well documented across the MSDN forums and developer lists - only recently did I come across a solution, so in the interests of helping out anyone else who has spent months trying to get this to work - here's a brief how-to. It assumes basic knowledge of Sharepoint Designer, →

Speaking of image memes…
Fark's thread in response to Hillary Clinton's quote 'He's not a maverick, he's a mimic' gets pretty good (scroll down to the four images with equals signs next to them). I'm not usually one to include politics here, outside of the subject of copyright of course, but after hearing that under Gov. Sarah Palin, rape victims were charged for their →
